Easy Piano Lesson – The Basics Of Piano Lessons
When you’re an absolute neophyte of easy piano lesson, it is always best to start with something you are familiar with or something you can become familiar with fast. {How about the Middle C}? You don’t know what it is? It is the key that can be found right at the center of the piano. If you know how a C key looks like, the Middle C is the white key that sits near the printed name of the manufacturer of your piano.
From knowing what the Middle C is, you can easily become familiar with what notes, octaves, scales, chords and chord progressions mean.
For your first lesson, rest your thumb on the Middle C. This is what is called the first position. Note that when it comes to playing the piano, each finger on your hand correspond to a specific number. The thumb is your number one finger and the rest of the fingers correspond to numbers 2, 3, 4, and 5. In the first position, your number one finger should be placed on the Middle C. You will observe that in many piano lessons, the number one position often involves two thumbs, but for now, the right thumb will do.
Moving on, place all your fingers in their positions. Now, lightly press each key from Middle C until you reach the next C. What you just created is a scale, the C Major scale. Note that in this scale, only white keys are used. As you discover other scales, you will learn that all other scales involve the use of black keys.
From this scale, you can start building chords. Chords are any set of keys on the piano or notes that are played as a group. Using the C Major scale, you can form several different chords. Now rest your thumb on Middle C again. Press it, skip one white key and press the E key, then skip another white key and go to the G key. Now that is the C major chord triad. A triad just like this chord is a chord that requires three different notes. Other chords use four to five notes.
Another common chord that may be created using the keys of this scale is the F Major chord. This chord is formed with 3 notes, F-A-C. Now go ahead and try playing this chord.
Did you notice something? Both the C major and F major chords are composed of chords that make up a pattern. This pattern is called the formula of the chord.
For major chords, the pattern is root key, four halftones and three halftones. Remember that a halftone is the smallest possible interval between two notes. On the piano, this is the interval between two individual keys.
As you progress through your lessons, you will notice that other chord patterns have their own formulas as well. Now, with the use of the formula for major chords, find the keys that comprise of the G major chord.
This particular easy piano lesson ends with a lesson on chord progression. Remember the chords you have learned earlier – C Major, F major and G Major? Just play these chords in succession and top these off with another C major from the same octave. There, you just played your first chord progression.
